5 BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ

Recovery is not easy or linear. Many people have struggled with their journey and part of finding your footing is learning from others’ mistakes and triumphs. Here are some of our personal favorites.

Terry: My Daughter’s Life-and-Death Struggle with Alcoholism by George McGovern – A fantastic book about one woman’s journey with addiction. Terry achieved long-term sobriety at one time, and she helped many women. Unfortunately, she relapsed and eventually died from her addiction.

Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man and 90 Days by Bill Clegg – Two amazing books about the struggles of one man’s addiction, recovery, relapse, and recovery. These perfectly show and discuss the reality and patterns of addictions without sugarcoating the harsh truths.

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey – an uncommonly genuine account of a life destroyed and reconstructed. James goes against the common mold of recovery and shows it’s possible.

Parched by Heather King – heather discusses her 20 year-long battle with alcoholism. Showing just how fast addiction consumes you and the work it takes to recover.

Girl Walks Out of a Bar: A Memoir by Lisa Smith – The tale of a high-functioning professional whose addiction almost destroys her work and personal life. Lisa does a fantastic job showing just how quickly “fun” can spiral out of control.
